Felipe Massa still has hopes for a Ferrari seat beyond 2012 – Formula 1 news
Felipe Massa believes that if he continues to perform there is no reason why he cannot stay on with Ferrari beyond 2012.
Massa started his season in dismal fashion as the team dealt with a lot of issues with its car. The balancing of the car combined with pace and Pirelli tyre issues caused Massa a lot of trouble.
There was much talk of the Brazilian to be scrapped in the current season because of the burden Ferrari has to bear while he does not perform. Yet Massa has found a way back to regain his form to some extent which was visible in the last couple of races.
Massa drove exceptionally well and aggressively at the British Grand Prix. He finished the race placed fourth easily his best finish for the entire season so far.
Yet many believe it is too little too late for him to redeem himself enough to remain in contention for the race seat that he has held for so many years.
The situation has changed a bit recently as Ferrari was clearly in talks with Mark Webber to replace Massa but the Aussie picked his current team Red Bull over a Ferrari move and signed another year’s contract.
Ferrari have also stated after Webber’s news of the Red Bull signing that they have not yet decided upon Massa’s future with the team.
Massa however feels that his future is not back in his own hands. He plans to perform his way back into contention.
“I think if we keep working like that and keep improving the car and working, I don't see a reason why I cannot be here,” explained Massa. “I feel much more comfortable, and driving in the direction that I like,” he said. “I feel there is a lot more to come.”
“This is the direction we need to keep working; to improve the situation every race and to make a different championship for myself from now until the end of the season,” he added.
It will be interesting to see how the season end for Massa and whether he can perform enough to entice Ferrari to go with him for another year at the least.
