Felipe Paulino shines as Kansas City Royals defeat Seattle Mariners 4-2 – MLB Update
Kansas City Royals’ starter, Felipe Paulino had a notable day with the ball as he threw seven innings and struck-out 11 batters with an ERA of 4.10 in the Royals’ 4-2 victory against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field, Seattle on September 10.
Royals started particularly well as they blasted three rapid runs to take a 3-0 lead. Billy Butler hit a grounder into fielder’s choice to first base and Alex Gordon scored the first run for Royals. Eric Hosmer struck a two-run homer (375 feet) towards left-field
and Butler added the third run to give the Royals a convincing lead.
On the other hand, Mariners opened their scoring account in the second inning by adding one run to cut their deficit 3-1. Justin Smoak hit a solo homer (401 feet) towards right-field to keep the Mariners alive during the second inning. The pitchers struck-out
the batters during the third inning and did not allow any run.
Kyle Seager, Ichiro Suzuki and Michael Saunders each struck-out swinging at the bottom of third inning. Mariners further reduced their lead 3-2 in the fourth inning when Mike Carp hit a one-run homer (391 feet) towards left-field. The batters were unable
to take runs from the fifth to eighth inning of the game.
Paulino surrendered two runs, two hits and two earned runs on his 107 pitches. Speaking to interpreter, he said, “I showed my stuff today: changeup, curveball, fastball, slider and sinker. Sometimes maybe they not work. Today, they stick together. It was
a pretty good game for both guys. Pineda pitched very well. He's young, too.”
Royals’ manager, Ned Yost commented on Paulino and said, “He (Paulino) threw the ball extremely well. His stuff was electric. And we did. We got to him early and hung on.”
In the seventh inning, Mike Moustakas doubled to deep right-centre while Chris Getz struck-out, Alcides Escobar fouled out and Salvador Perez lined out to right-field without taking even a single run. Mariners’ batters did not find any way to steal runs
at the bottom of eighth inning as Adam Kennedy, Miguel Olivo and Seager each struck-out and missed scoring chances.
Royals advanced their lead 4-2 in the ninth inning when Jeff Francoeur struck a solo homer (404 feet) towards left-field. However, Royals produced a thrill in the series after winning a crucial game at Seattle.
