Felipe Soares and Andre Ghem progress into the second round of qualifying draw at the 2011 Santos Brasil Tennis Open
World number 1707th Felipe Soares of Brazil beat compatriot Allan Oliveira in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 in the first round qualifier at the 2011 Santos Brasil Tennis Open on Saturday.
The match was a runaway success for Soares, who crushed his contender in straights sets to win his first round match at the tournament. Soares, who is just 18-years-old, didn’t drop a single set throughout the match.
The opening set was a crushing blow for Oliveira as he had no chance to recover. Soares broke his serve thrice to clinch the opening set with a bagel. Oliveira won a total of 11 points during the first set.
In the final set, both opponents left no stone unturned. Oliveira played tremendously well and landed a majority of his first serves. He delivered 84 percent whereas his opponent could only manage 40 percent. Nonetheless, Soares
did win a higher percentage on his first serves, a whopping 100 percent, as opposed to Oliveira’s 65. Soares didn’t face a single break point opportunity, though he managed to break Oliveira’s serves twice to clinch the set with a 6-3 score line.
Both players played very well and put up an interesting performance especially in the second set. In the next round, Soares will face compatriot Andre Ghem for the first time in his tennis career.
In another match during the day, Juho Paukku of Finland defeated Rafael Leme of Brazil in a thrilling 3-set encounter at the 2011 Santos Brasil Tennis Open in Santos, Brazil. The match ended with a score line of 6-4, 6(7)-7, 6-0
on Saturday.
The whole match was on fire with a series of serves breaks. Both players served hard to break each other serves in the sets. A total number of six aces were seen in the whole match, three of each contestant. Leme converted 53 percent
on his first serves, whereas the ultimate winner, Paukku gained an impressive 73 percent on them. Paukku converted four of five break chances while his opponent lagged behind with a meager 38 percent. A tie-breaker was also seen in the second set which was
claimed by the Leme, the only set he won during the match.
Paukku won 55 percent points in total, five percent higher than his opponent. Dropping just a single set during the whole match, Paukku emerged victorious with straight sets victory.
After winning the match, Paukku will face country fellow Timo Nieminen in the next round of the tournament.
