Actually, the scientific name of the domestic cat is Felis catus. Felis is the genus, and catus is the species. Scientific names should be in italics (apparently not possible on this site), with the genus name capitalized and the species name in lower case. Subspecies are denoted by a third name - for example, the tiger is Panthera tigris. The Bengal subspecies is Panthera tigris tigris, whilst the Siberian subspecies is Panthera tigris altaica.

Some people classify the domestic cat as a subspecies the wildcat, Felis silvestris, which is its ancestor. This would make the domestic cat's scientific name Felis silvestris catus. However, not everyone agrees with this classification, considering the domestic cat different enough from its ancestor to be given specific status.
