Felix Hernandez comments on his final outing as Seattle Mariners prepare for next series
Felix Hernandez went up against and lost to the Texas Rangers 0-3 on Sunday, September 18 at the Safeco Field in Seattle. The Seattle Mariners’ star was looking for a win to climb to 15 wins, this season.
He unfortunately hit a road block as the Texans proved too strong against the maestro. The star hurler worked out a defeat in his last outing of the series. The player commented on his role on Sunday.
Hernandez looked strong in his role on the mound but his reign of supremacy ended immediately in the top of the fourth when Adrian Beltre pounced on the hurler with a game changing two – run homer. The Texan third baseman was up to the task to put the 2010
American Cy Young Champion away for the blast. The ball thrower had two hitters out at the time, as he was unfortunate to pick up the runs.
"I was ahead in the count and tried to go in, but that was in the middle," Hernandez said of his battle with old friend Beltre. "And he just hit it ... hard. He always talks about that. And he got me."
The player was able to comment on the Texas Rangers. The club is currently on top of the American League West and they look good in clearing the postseason qualification, after being 4.5 wins ahead of their rivals, the Los Angeles Angels.
"They're dangerous," Hernandez said. "If you throw quality pitches, you can get them out. If you make a mistake, you're going to pay. That's what happened with Belly."
Rangers’ designated hitter and long time active club player, Michael Young was able to comment on the Seattle hurler.
"Felix is one of the best in the game," Young said.
Hernandez walks out of the season with 14 wins and 13 losses. He is equal to his last year’s standing. He has a 3.32 earned runs average and is the top player for the club. It will be interesting to see if the Mariners can hold the pitcher down for more
wins next season if they strengthen their hitting line-up. Matt Harrison had help from his Rangers’ hitters.
Eric Wedge will be looking to provide cover to his player if he wants him to pick more wins.
