Felix Hernandez sparks as Seattle Mariners humiliate San Diego Padres, 6-1 – MLB Update
Seattle Mariners’ starter, Felix Hernandez outclassed the batters of the San Diego Padres as he threw eight solid innings with an ERA of 3.01 in the Mariner’s 6-1 victory against the Padres at Petco Park, San Diego on May 22.
Hernandez permitted just one run on six hits with one earned run. He had 13 strike-outs right through the game and did not allow a walk in his 114 pitches. Hernandez was satisfied with the team’s performance and said, “We've been doing a great job, and not
just the pitchers. We've been busting it and working hard.”
The pitchers did not allow even a single run in the first inning and the score-card remained empty. The Mariners started their second inning with one run as Brendan Ryan scored a single on the grounder hit of Ichiro Suzuki to short-stop position. The Mariners
took a 1-0 lead at the end of second inning. Michael Saunders moved to second base during the second innings.
The batters added two runs for the Mariners in the third inning and led off their lead, 3-0. Justin Smoak and Miguel Olivo both scored two runs collectively, when Carlos Peguero doubled to deep centre-field. On the other side, the Padres’ batters failed
to score any run until sixth inning. The pitchers were on top again as they did give away a run from the fourth to the sixth inning.
Hernandez was outstanding with his pitches as he threw the ball in good line. The Mariners’ Manager Eric Wedge had a huge ovation for Hernandez. During press conference, Wedge said, “I felt like he was throwing the ball as good as we've seen this year for
a good portion of the game. He kind of had to grind through it the last couple of innings.”
In the seventh inning, the Mariners’ batters contributed two runs and the Padres opened their scoring account by one run and the score-board moved to 5-1 at the end of seventh. Adam Kennedy and Olivo scored two runs on the double-run shot of Ryan to centre-field
position. Chase Headley posted the first and last run for the Padres when Chris Denorfia singled to right-centre field.
The Mariners got a 6-1 lead in the top of ninth inning. Franklin Gutierrez drove a shot towards centre-field and Olivo posted one run on it.
