Felix Magath determined to lead Schalke to Bundesliga title
Schalke manager Felix Magath has said that he will not walk away from the club despite their poor start to the season and insisted that he will eventually lead the side to the Bundesliga title.
The club have suffered a poor start to the 2010-11 season after they claimed just five points from their first eight league games. Despite several pundits having tipped them as a team capable of challenging for the title this season, they are already 16
points off the pace set by Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.
Though the club could hardly have gotten off to a poorer start, Magath has insisted that he will not walk away from a side that came close to winning the German championship last season and said that time was all he needed to mould his team into champions.
Magath has already won the title twice with Bayern Munich and took Wolfsburg to the championship in the 2008-09 season.
'We want to be more attack-minded'
He told television channel Sports1 that: “I am staying here until we win the league. At the moment, we are playing like a team who is fighting relegation. Of course I am convinced that we will get out of danger, though. Not only have we revolutionised the
playing staff, but also the system. We want to be more attack-minded and that has still got to be harmonised. If you want to be successful then you have got to take risks and we are just at the start of this revolution."
The pre-season expectations for Schalke were heightened by the arrival of Raul Gonzalez Blanco, but the Real Madrid legend has faltered despite having a stellar reputation — he has scored just one goal this term.
However, Magath claimed that the former Spain international would eventually prove to be an important player for the club. He said that: "He is an icon — a world-class player. He is getting more and more dangerous and will score more goals."
