Felix Magath not leaving Schalke
Schalke 04 coach Felix Magath has no plans of leaving the German Bundesliga club any time soon. The 57-year-old said he wants to stay with the Koenigsblauen until they win the league title.
"I am staying here until we win the league. At the moment, we are playing like a team who is fighting relegation. Of course I am convinced that we will get out of danger, though," said Magath in an interview
with Sport1.
"Not only have we revolutionised the playing staff, but also the system. We want to be more attack-minded and that has still got to be harmonised. If you want to be successful then you have got to take
risks and we are just at the start of this revolution," added the beleaguered coach.
Magath has high hopes for Schalke in the ongoing season but things have not turned out well for the club so far. Schalke currently sit in 16th spot with only five points from eight matches. They are just
ahead Cologne on goal difference and a point better than bottom-ranked Stuttgart.
The Koenigsblauen are coming off a 2-2 draw with Stuttgart over the weekend. They are set to play Hapoel Tel Aviv in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday and Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on
Saturday.
Magath, who was born to a Puerto Rican father and a German mother, is no stranger to winning championships. He led Hamburg to the German League titles in 1979, 1982 and 1983 and the European Cup crown
in 1983. Magath was also a member of the 1982 and 1986 FIFA World Cup squads that finished runners-up in both tournaments.
As a manager, he steered Bayern Munich to back-to-back Bundesliga and German Cup titles in 2005 and 2006 to achieve a rare back-to-back double. He signed with Wolfsburg in 2007 and led the club to their
first ever Bundesliga title in 2009. Magath left Wolfsburg shortly after leading the team to their maiden Bundesliga crown.
