Magath claimed that the opposition’s 7-1 loss will not play a part in his side’s game against Leverkusen. He admitted that it was an embarrassing loss but stated that the players should be proud of reaching the knock-out stages of the competition which is a huge achievement itself.
The manager insisted that Bayer Leverkusen’s form in the league has been sensational in the last few weeks as they are on a three-match winning streak after defeating the likes of FC Augsburg, FC Koln and Bayern Munich. He added that Robin Dutt’s side plays brilliantly in away games and are great when attacking the opposition’s goal.
“Their heavy defeat to Barcelona does not say anything in terms of the Bundesliga. Leverkusen made it into the best 16 of Europe's top club competition and that is an excellent achievement. We expect them to attack us and be the strong side which has always been dangerous away from home in the Bundesliga,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The former Schalke boss expects the Wolfsburg fans to be behind the team in the next game. He admitted that the team has not been playing well in the recent weeks but stressed that the players need some confidence and the fans can give them that.
He played down rumours that the supporters will protest in the next game and insisted that the team has full support from the club’s fans.
“Our fans supported us from start to finish in Kaiserslautern and I expect the same tomorrow. The relationship between the fans and the team is intact,” he concluded.
Wolfsburg sit in 11th place on the Bundesliga standings table with 28 points from the 24 games played thus far, winning eight times in the process.
