Hello there,

I have recently seen an advertisement for the Ps3 80 GB console coming out very soon (within the next month or two) and i am only interested in buying it if i can play ps2 games as well.

Now i am not sure if the ones they stock in America are the same as Australia because :

A) I have been getting A LOT of mixed answers on this Q.

B) When i read other people's yahoo Qs on this, some will say yes and others say partial and the rest say no!

I would love it if someone could give me a definite answer on this question but i'd like an article as well that states whether or not it'll play the games.

My boyfriend has the 60GB ps3 and that's the only one i know so far that plays it but i've always been a playstation fan and would like to get the latest console...but only if i know i'll get to play my classic ps2 games.

Thanks whoever is able to help, anyone who can answer my question well enough will get 10 points and a thumbs up for anyone with a helpful answer

  1. i think all consoles over 60GB play PS2 games, i know 40GB doesn't

try going into Consumer electronics > games and gear > Playstation

some people may be able to help you there.

  2. ps3 160gb will be out in november 16 2008  $499.00 w/dualshock controller in is backwards compatible which means you can play all your ps2 and ps1 games blu-ray disc movies and every thing hope this helps out alot    :)ava06

  3. Yes you could play them but you will need to buy an emulator as an addition. That is the only way. This is a link that states it.

  4. The new 80gb PS3 (australian) will NOT play your old PS2 games. There isn't much difference between the 40 and 80gb units.

You are dead right. The 60gb unit your boyfriend has is the only PS3 that spins your old PS2 games.

If you want a 60gb. Import it. play-asia.com, renchi.com are two good sites but they quickly sell out of the 60gb units when they get them. Yes, they will work here in Australia. If you do import, make sure you get the 220v-250volt units. Doesn't matter if they are "asia" models, just so long as you note the voltage.

The talk of the 160gb unit having backwards compatibility is still up in the air, for us Aussies anyway.

    Good luck with it.

    Zoe.
