  1. If you live in the States and use American money to purchase items they will believe you to American.

Quebec isn't one of the friendliest places to go, unless you speak French. They can be down right rude.

I wouldn't worry too much about it though. Just have fun!

  2. Hey there! I grew up in the States as well and have been in Canada since I was 10 years old. People at my school thought it was sweet that I had an accent and although I did get called the "American", it was not meant to be hurtful or mean.

Come to Canada with an open mind about the people and be courteous. Unless someone works in retail or at a restaurant, no one actually cares about where or how you spend your money (in response to the money spending in Canada). It's not like we run around begging for the American dollar as lately it has been lower than or at par with the Canadian one.

A lot of Canadians are confused about Americans and vice versa. Also, don't be deterred because someone said Canadians are backstabbers. I see things from the perspective of both Americans and Canadians, and I can tell you that it varies from PERSON to PERSON and not everyone in either country is the same. You will meet many sincere Canadian people.

You hold a Canadian citizenship, however, so be proud of it. Who cares where you've lived before? I know many Canadians who have lived in Thailand, Australia, etc. and it doesn't change who they are as a person.

The other answerer was right though - people in Quebec can be a little rude if you can't speak French. It might be helpful to learn a few key phrases. They appreciate it when you make an attempt.

  3. As long as you are friendly, and polite, I don't think it matters what you are. :D When I worked in motels and restaurants, there were plenty of Americans who were way nicer then some Canadians. LOL, really, who you are as a person matters most, and since you seemed worried, I think you must be quite caring.

    Enjoy your visit!

  4. Don't worry to much, as in all places some people are rude and some friendly.  It's not everyone who has a prejudice against americans, we never went as far as changing the name of stuff like french fries ;-)

Maybe in Quebec you would come across some narrow minded people who think the whole world should speak french to accommodate them, but in general people will be friendly, especially if you start with a Bonjour.  And I say that as a french-Canadian living in Montreal.

Have fun discovering your country, and relax we don't bite ;-)

  5. Canadians are not anti-American to their faces. Just behind their backs.

When visiting (i.e. coming to Canada to spend their money) Americans are welcomed with open arms and warm hearts.

    Don't worry.
