Question:

Female Dwarf hamster; pregnant or not?

One female and one male dwarf hamster were kept in the same cage for quite a while. I've put the male in a different cage, fearing that the female is pregnant! She DOES look a bit plump (considering that she was pretty tiny ) & constantly digs the bedding as if she was trying to make a nest. I do think she is pregnant...but I wouldn't want to get my hopes up.

Are there any other symptoms that would tell me that she is definitely pregnant?

  1. she will start eating less and less but she will not show the belly fat for maybe two more weeks but she will not come out of the cadge after the two weeks so get her alot of exercise and do not take the baby's out or move them she will think that they are not hers and eat them.

  2. The gestation period for dwarf hamsters is 18-21 days from the mating day.

It is very difficult to tell if a hamster is pregnant. The reason being her size won't increase until the last 3 days before delivery. I have even had one dwarf that never got significantly fat but went on to deliver a litter of 4!

Some clues include when she may be building a bigger nest, hoarding a lot of food in the nest, will eat and drink water more than usual and sleep a lot more if she is pregnant. In the last 4 days before delivery, she will look big in the belly and teats would be prominent.

When my hammy was pregnant, she had big fights with my male dwarf who was in the same cage and I had to separate them so that she had the cage to herself.

Whether she is pregnant or not, treat her as though she is pregnant for the next 25 days. Make sure you give her lots of clean food and water and supplement her protein intake by giving her hard boiled egg whites and little quantities of skimmed milk. Also supplement her regular food with pieces of fresh vegetables like carrots. Throw away any stale food after a day. Try to put the cage in an area where she has the least disturbance from noises and activities.

Read up on the internet on how to handle pregnant hamsters and hamster babies so that if she delivers a litter, you would be confident about how to handle the situation.

  3. Signs that your hamster is pregnant: She will build a large nest and hoard food in it.  And, she will stop coming into heat.  Around day 10 of pregnancy, her belly will be larger and her nipples may be more prominent.

A male and female dwarf hamster pair can produce a *lot* of offspring, as they will mate again soon after she gives birth.  If you don't want any more litters, put the male in another cage before she gives birth.

  4. She will become muchh more aggressive and tend to sleep alot.

She probably is pregnant if she has been kept in a cage with a male for awhile then she most likely is.

  5. My friend had two and didn't know they were a boy and a girl.  She didn't even know the girl was pregnant til she went to school one day and found babies.  But she did say that she was nesting more than usual.
