  1. Well, first off I need to know what kind of Marine Engineering you are referring to.

This typically refers to a ship's engineer that operates and maintains the propulsion and various other parts of a ship. It can also refer to someone who designs naval machinery, or naval architecture and even shipbuilding.

If you are intending to be on-board of a ship working on it, then there are obvious pros and cons.

    Cons:

You will be at sea for a very long time, and most likely in the presence of a primarily male crew (I'm not being sexist, but my aunt worked on the coastal ferries and that was the thing she complained of most). Now, that may be desirable to you or it may not be.

You do not have the advantage of being a cruise line traveller. You will be working in the guts of the ship more often than you will be on the deck. Sunlight may be scarce in your daily life.

The nightlife in the middle of the Pacific is really S****y.

If your ship dvelops a problem, you will be stuck fixing the problem until it is fixed. There will be little or no chance of being spelled off by coworkers.

This type of work can be very difficult physically at times and you will essentially be a type of heavy duty mechanic.

This career can take a long time before you are a senior mechanic, and you could see yourself getting ***** work for a long time.

    Pros:

You will get to see the world without having to sign up for combat.

You will have lots of vacation time when you do actually arrive in the various places around the world.

You will be one of the most important people on the ship. You will make a lot of money.

You will be very fit after a short while.

You will have a challenging and rewarding career that many people want, but are too afraid to take.

If you are intending to be a design engineer for naval architecture or shipbuilding here are some of the pros and cons:

    Pros:

You get to see a project go from the drawing table to operation. There is something about designing something and then standing next to it as it gets built. It's similar to watching your baby grow up.

You will make an extreme amount of money.

You will work in a challenging and rewarding field.

Your designs can change people's lives for the better.

This is a sector that could really use some new fresh ideas to make the world a better place.

    Cons:

Your designs can change people's lives for the worse.

This requires a fair amount of formal education and you are only slowly introduced into design, typically.

It can be difficult to find a good work environment. Unfortunately, engineering in much of the world is still a male dominated industry. I know several of my fellow engineers that are women, and they claim to experience a slight amount of sexism.

I think either way, if you are enthusiastic about boats and the sea, you will be good to go. I would encourage you to explore the options further.

  2. Are you mad? It's can be one of the dirtiest stress full jobs around. However, the hours can be very good (you do a lot for a time then have a long time off). The Captain may run the ship but it's the engineer that makes it go. If anything breaks, you will have ulcers big time. Ships cost heaps to keep running but they cost more when they stop.

  3. It's a wonderful profession.

    1) You can sail around the world,

    2) You can meet people of different races

    3) Heaven for Sea food lovers

    4) You can become an explorer

    Problems

    1) more than 6 months in a calendar you will be sailing

    2) sea sickness

    3) can become a prey to ocean fury

    4) get detached from the family
