Question:

Female best man?! What Do they wear?

My brother just recently asked his girlfriend to marry him, shortly after he asked me to be his best man. The problem is, I'm a girl. He is not really my brother, but he has been my best friend for years and years and when I get married I don't think that I would want anyone else standing next to me either. My dilemma is, I don't know what I should wear. There has been talks about me matching the rest of the groomsmen and there has been other talk about me just wearing a formal black dress. Does anyone know of this happening before or seen what others have done in this situation? If you have pictures this would be great.

  1. Dress like charlie chaplin

  2. What you wear should really be up to the bride. My husband had his sister stand up for him in our wedding, and she wore a black dress that matched the bridesmaid dresses (except their dresses were red, but it was the same style) with a black bolero jacket over top.

  3. Hey there!

That's a big responsibility, and he must really love and trust you, congrats!

You can wear pretty much anything to fit in.  If you want to go the route of maching the gals in the wedding party, that's completely do-able.  As a Wedding DJ, I've seen my share of male AND female "best men".

I've also seen the female "best man" in a nice black dress, in the same style or fabric as the gals in the bridal party (think David's Bridal - they have various colors of the same dress) with the "color splash" that the groomsmen are wearing somewhere else on the dress, as an accent.  Think chiffon wrap in the color that the bridesmaids are wearing, or a ribbon, or the shoes... something that matches BOTH sides.

And then I've seen gals in a tux... but if you're endowed with any gals up top, I have to tell you, it looks not-so-not.  Makes the skinniest of gals look plump.

Whatever you do, you'll have a fun time.  David's Bridal and Men's Warehouse ((Tux) are connected, so the color schemes are the same.

    Good luck!

  4. I think sometimes the Best Woman wears a tux jacket, shirt and maybe tie with a black skirt or a dress in the same color as the bridesmaids only in a simpler cut. I have also seen a black dress and I think that would be best.

I think the best terms for the opposite s*x honor attendant roles are Best Woman and Man of Honor. I think female best man just sounds wonky.

  5. wear a pretty dress and I wouldn't make it black. just don't go looking like a homosexual. that wouldn't do.

  6. this sounds like made of honor.... but in the best man version. i think you should just wear a regular dress.

  7. Sounds like you are setting some new wedding standards, so make up the rules as you go!!  I like the idea of a simple yet formal dress in the same color as the groomsmen personally.  Why not ask the bride and groom, their ideas may be helpful too.

  8. You should be wearing whatever makes you comfy. I defenitly wouldn't wear a tux because it just wouldn't fit you as nice as a dress. Mens clothes are always for non hippy people (men). I say wear the same dress the maid of honor is wearing (if she's wearing something a little different than the other bridesmaids.. or if they are all wearing the same thing you could wear that. Talk to the bride and ask her what her preference is. Maybe they are all getting the same color but the seperates (pick your own bottom and your own top) then you can pick whatever you like out of them. Either way I think it's a great idea and I'm happy you guys mean that much to each other.

  9. Where a dress in a color that matches the groomsmen tuxedos.  Keep it elegant and simple.

  10. You can:

    1. Wear a dress that matches the suit of the groomsmen

    2. Wear a dress that matches the groomsmens' accent color (shirt, tie, etc.)

    3. Wear a dress that matches the bridemaids' color, or wear a dress like the bridesmaid's

Talk to your friend's fiance, I'm sure she has an idea of what you should wear. ;)

  11. You could go a number of ways.  The three most popular are 1) the same dress and color as the bridesmaids, 2) a black dress (perhaps the same dress as the bridesmaids just black), or 3) a complimentary colored dress (ex.  If their colors are red and yellow and the bridesmaids are wearing red, you could wear yellow.)  It's up to the bride and groom ultimately so ask them what they are thinking.

In this picture http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/show... the female best man is in black.

  12. I think it's a great idea! You're important to him, and you deserve to be part of his wedding party, no matter what s*x you are. I would suggest wearing a woman's  suit that is inspired by men's fashion. That would be so cute, and it wouldn't look too weird.

  13. My uncle actually had his female best friend as his best man (person?) and at his wedding she wore the same as the groomsmen. But then she also had short hair and was quite a tomboy anyway apparently. I'm sure if you talk to your brother you could sort something out so it would look ok and you could be comfortable too

  14. I suggest that you wear a black dress.  Don't wear a suit, it's a little cliche.  Nobody cares if you actually look like a man, it's the fact that you're there for him.  the s*x of the person/wardrobe doesn't make a difference.

  15. formal black and white dress that's what i wore it was similar to this one

    It matches tux well

  16. I think that a nice black dress would be appropriate for being a female best man. Or, if you feel comfortable, you could always wear a black pant suit.

Best thing to do is check with the bride and groom. I am sure that they will have some feedback on what they want you to wear.

Here is a picture - this lady was the female best man and she wore a black dress. It looked nice:

  17. How wonderful to be asked to such a position in your friend's wedding!

I think either option will work, but seek your guidance from your friend and his fiancee.  Although I know the black dress would be formal, in some instances and cultures it could be seen as disapproving of the marriage.

    Good luck!

  18. this reminds me of the Made Of Honor movie!! I agree with the other answers, wear a nice dress to match or coordinates with the other men.

    good luck!!

  19. i would say wear a dress that's the color of the theme if there is a theme or wear a pretty woman suit that with a different kind of bold/patterend shirt inside

  20. I think this is a fabulous idea!  Sadly, I don't have any pictures, but I would recommend going with a nice dress in the same color as the groom's/groomsmen's tuxes with accents (ribbon, embroidery, etc.) in the wedding accent color.

There would be nothing wrong with you wearing a tux, but you should get to look fabulous and feminine.  This is a silly question, but I hope it gives perspective:  If/When he stands up with/for you, would you expect him to wear a dress like your bridesmaids?  If not, you shouldn't wear a tux - IMO.

Another idea would be a stylish - but women's - pantsuit with a blouse in the wedding color.  It's kind of a meet-in-the-middle thing.

    Good Luck!

  21. formal black dress, but not fancier than the bridesmaids

  22. At my wedding, my husband had his sisters stand up with him and they just wore simple black dresses.  Very classic.  Don't stress about it!!  If you give me your email, I can send you a picture.

  23. I have seen a female best man in both dresses and a female version of a tux. Maybe suggest wearing a black skirt and white shirt like the groomsmen and maybe with a cumberbund matching theirs.

The black dress idea is also nice but, I have also seen them in a dress matching the brides maids or a dress in the same color as the brides maids but, a different style.

It just all depends on what the Bride and Groom want.

  24. I havent seen a lady best man before, can you be his maid of honour?  As a maid of honour u can still do everything that the best man does, like help out with the wedding on the grooms side of things and hold the rings on the wedding day.  And you could have any dress u like! aslong as the bride is happy with the colour!  Black is a bit dark, but it has been done before, with nice white ribbons and things.  Does that help any?

  25. well I don't have pics, but i do have an idea. if  you are going to be his "best man" than wear a dress matching the colors that the groomsmen. therefore you can match, and wear a dress

  26. Ignore the trolls, they are a) jealous you can have a best friend of the opposite s*x. and b) probably children who don't understand it

I love female best-mans.  My friend is actually having a male maid of honour.  Anyways, you could do a bitof a cross dressing type thing (like they did on Gilmore Girls) a simlpe up-do and a suit.  A black dress would be nice, with maybe a nice scarf or wrap that matches the colours of the vest(or ties) if they are having them coloured.

Good luck and congrats to your friend :D
