Question:

Female cat not using litter box?

Both of my cats are recovering from fleas. Our one female cat poos and pees every night in the same location - right by our front door. She's a very scittish cat that is rarely seen but at night comes out. We've taken her to the vet, kept the litter box clean, not changed brands of food nor litter. We've moved the litter box closer to a quiet room where she likes to hide, but every morning it's the same surprise by the front door. I'm out of new things to try - any ideas?

  1. I had a kitty just like that.  I hate to say it, but for 12 years, she hardly used the box.  We moved 8 years ago to a home with a garage and she had to stay in the garage unless she was supervised in the house.  She just pooed on the concrete and we hosed it out.  Now, I did have some suggestions given to me.  There is a product called "cat attract' that worked with her for a while.  It's a litter additive that is supposed to attract cats to use the box.  Someone also told us (tho we never tried this) to put the litter box in her chosen potty place.  Try those things.  Good luck to you.

  2. this is a very common behavior problem by cat owners rubbing ther nose in it is very wrong because that tells them nothing and any way cats do not find their urine or f***s distasteful  this is the first thing everybody wants to tell you but no no no  medical problems are one possibility  urinary tract is one possibilty this can be painful and cause frequent urination  in addition kidney, liver, and thyriod diseases often lead to increased drinking and urination  so we have to rule medical problems out first  you have done some of the things that i would have suggested but here are a few more is there something that changed in the home cat do this to say you upset me  it could be she don't like it when your gone she don't like the litter or where the liter is or the box she ueses  or the texure they say if they are going on a hard smooth surface such as the kitchen floor to put tile in the bottom of the litter box or is she using the carpet than to put a piece of carpet in the bottom i do know that this is a very hard thing to figure out and the longer it goes on the harder it will be to break  if medical is ruled out than of corse we turn to behavioral problems and this is a very diffacult thing to figure out and i have to tell you that 9 times out of 10 you don.t most cats prefer unscented finer texture litter about 1 -2 inches deep, a box with low sides, overweight and older cats need bigger boxes most cats prefer uncovered boxes  a quite location, private and far from their feeding area  an easy place for them to get to  keep clean    i really wish you luck and keep loving your cat

  3. Have you got two litter trays cats are very clean animals and I would say your cat is pooing and weeing by the front door because the litter tray has been used by the other cat, buy another litter tray or teach them to use a cat flap

  4. do you have two litter boxes? some cats will not use a litter box used by another cat. also try putting some potting soil in the litter.

  5. You did not mention if she was litter box trained before and then suddenly started going on the floor   also how old is she and how long have you had her ? anyway if she is healthy and young when you find the mess gently pick her up , take her to the place she messed and rub her nose in it  tell her she is a bad girl  let her know you are not happy and put her in her litter boxif you know about what time she eats put  her in her box soon afterwards so she gets the idea ..if she has already  messed put that in litter box too . eventually she should get the idea   wash the area thoroughly then rinse with white vinegar and water  they have pet odor bottles at Walmartin the rug shampoo section and places they rent rug shampoo machines like hardware stores and spray the area after your clean and rinse it to get the odor out and the smell Be persistent  that is what it takes do not expect it to stop right way . but it should stop    recovering from fleas should not affect  her going to her box  .. Good luck
