Question:

Female cat with urinary tract infection, I think? Help?

Recently, I think my 9 year old cat has developed what may be a UTI. She has been urinating outside of her litter box and I found bloody urine on the carpet! It has me so so so so worried. She is at the Vet right now. But, has anyone experienced this with their female cat before...and if so, is your cat ok?

My cat is the Cat-Love-Of-My-Life; she is the best ever! So, I can't handle thinking she is in pain.

Will medication help her?

Ive ready stories online (many stories) that say they took their cat to the Vet but the symptoms persist.

Any advice?

Thanks!

  1. a urinary tract infection can be cured with antibiotics.

  2. Sorry to hear your kitty is under the weather.

I had a female cat with similar symptoms and it did turn out to be a UTI, after our vet performed blood and urine tests. She was prescribed Baytril which helped her a lot. Since she had Struvite stones in her bladder which started the infection, (there was no sign initially, but she started peeing away from the box which got her to the vet, stat), my vet suggested feeding her cat food which contained no grain.

That also helped to prevent stones from recurring.

Since each cat is an individual, your vet will prescribe the medication based on the results of tests.

Symptoms of a UTI can be caused by other medical conditions which may not have been diagnosed. In my experience, medication and diet change worked great.

As far as pain is concerned, your vet will prescribe the appropriate pain medication if needed.

Good luck to you with your kitty. I know how hard it is to have a beloved cat not feeling well.

  3. No vet told me to do this.  It was just common sense in the end.

I combined a little lemon, honey and water and squirted it down my cat's throat.  Followed by two more squirts of water.

It cleared it up over the next day....

Lemon and honey are safe on animals and have antibacterial bennefits.  It worked fast.  the vet stuff didn't help AT ALL..

  4. My oldest kitty (17 yo) was having problems with recurring UTI about a year ago.  We had three incidents of vet appointments, 2 week rounds of medicines and just after she finished each round, she would start straining and have bloody urine.  Luckily, she did not have stones or crystals.

Since this is your kitty's first UTI, see what the test results show to be certain it is not stones or crystals.  Give her the antibiotics as prescribed.

Kitties are like us that they need lots of water to prevent kidney and urinary tract problems.  But kitties are not big water drinkers, they get most of their moisture from their food.  If you feed kitty primarily dry food, consider changing to a wet formula and add a little water to that to make it soupy.  This serves two purposes..it give kitty more water and keeps the food moist longer.  You can still leave a little dry food for kitty, just try to get her to eat more moist.  The first link below is to a cat nutrition website written by a veterinarian and cat lover.  She explains in easy to read terms about feeding dry, wet and raw diets.  She also explains some of the health problems related to poor diet.

The other thing I did was quit using dusty litter like most of the clay litters are and changed to the ground wheat, Swheat.  I didn't want to forever be treating my Bonnie with antibiotics, so I started researching.  The dust from clay litter was cited as being a culprit in the reinfection of some UTIs.  So I changed litter and she has not had an episode since.  That was six months ago.

There are other non-dusty litters, such as the compressed paper (Yesterday's News) and compressed wood (Feline Pine) and ground corn (World's Best Cat Litter).  I tried the Yesterday's News and Feline Pine and although I really liked them for their wetness and odor control, my cats did not care for them.  The cats and I liked the World's Best Cat Litter, except it gets a musty smell very quick only after a few uses, even a freshly cleaned box.  The links are below so you can read more about them and decide what may work for your and your baby.

Purrs to you and your kitty.
