my girlfriend just got 2 male mice and they started fighting within the first 10mins they were put in the tank. (which is also a 10gal.) and it says that females are a lot less likley to fight but i was wondering, would it be a good idea?

  1. Yes rats are very social and prefer to be in groups.

  2. I have four females in a 5 gallon together, they are all fine. My two males are separate though each in a cage on their own. They may have a small conflict to establish a dominant female, usually the older of the four wins. No blood has ever occurred and they spend most of their time grooming and playing together.

The only time I had conflict is when a male was dropped in with the females.

Although before this batch of mice I did have three brothers live together. So it is possible :) Good Luck!

  3. It is true the females fight less. I had three males and one of them actually bit the other, then later on i got females who seemed to like to share space unlike the males.

  4. three females from the same litter MIGHT not fight, however like humans, you can't really make them get along and they are all very individual on how they get along.  Any mice from another litter will not likely get along and males will not get along when they mature.  Obviously you also don't want to keep males and females together.  Make sure you still have food, water, bedding that is not cedar and an exercise wheel for them also
