  1. Filly is a female horse until the age of 5. The filly becomes a mare when she is 5 and older.

  2. hi a female horse is a yearling when she reaches 1 years old and a filly when  she is 2  after that she becomes a mare however there is quite often confusion on this question because the horse is still considered a baby up untill it is 5 people call them fillys but this is incorrect and the official version by the book is up untill they are 2 they are a filly in thoughbred racing as their official birthday is always the 1st jan regardless of when they are born hence the reason why breeders try to make sure their horse will foal as near to january as possible so that they race as a 2 year old a full 2 years old as the further their official birthaday from january puts them at a disadvantage against other horses born nearer the jan date

  3. Up to 3 years, a filly, over 3, a mare.

EDIT..kmnmiami got me thinking....A filly is less than  4yrs old.

  4. What's with the overabundance of ignorant people trying to answer this question??  I guess it's good that people know that there are 2 terms for a female horse ("filly" and "mare"), but if you don't know when a filly becomes a mare, then don't guess and give this person the wrong answer to her question!

A filly is a female horse 4 years old or younger.

A mare is a female horse 5 years old or older.
