The female needs blood to produce eggs.  Only Females bite. The males feed off plant juices and help make little mosquitoes.

Male mosquitoes do not bite.  Only the female mosquito will suck blood. They are actually attracted to the carbon dioxide exhaled from the breath of humans/mammals.  Light colored clothing attracts mosquitoes.   They are less attracted by dark colored clothing.  Mosquitoes usually start biting just before sunset.  They will bite through early morning.  If you have a mosquito in your bedroom at night and you can't manage to swat it, if you turn on a light source in another room, the mosquito will likely head in the direction of the light.
