okay, i've decided on my career. i wanted to be a police officer or cosmetologist but i was worried about the money; because neither make alot. (my dad's been a police for over 20 years) so i've decided to start beauty school soon. and when i get done with it, i'll do the police acadamy. that way, i will work four days as a cop, then 3-4 days as a hairdresser when i'm off and in my spare time. that way i will have both of the jobs i want, with double the money. do you think this is a good/bad idea?

  1. if you have time/money to go to school for both...DO IT.  chances are if you end up not liking your job with your 35 your not going to go back to school.  you'll stick it out and waste your time wondering if you should have done the other.  plus that sounds like a fun life.  the least it is a fall back plan

  2. Though it may sound good to you now. It won't take you long to figure out that it won't work once you start trying it.

Police officers will spend A LOT of their "off time" in court. Which should earn you a decent amount of overtime. You're dad can surely give you some insight as to the extra requirements and responsibilities that are thrown at officers.

Also, there are still a lot of departments who will not allow their officers to hold a second job.

I know this may not be what you want to hear, but I wanted to be honest with you. I have been an officer for 10 years now, and believe me, I haven't had the time to even look for a second job.

    Best of luck to you.

  3. Bad idea, stick with the cosmetologist job. You never have to truthfully declare all your tips on your income tax forms. Who's to know how much you were tipped?

  4. It sounds like a good idea, just remember that you may have court on your off days so find a salon with flexible hours.

  5. maybe you could be in charge of makeup for undercover hookers and drug dealers. that way you get to do both jobs in one place. seriously, by the time your foot patrol is over you will be too exhausted to stand on your feet and do hair.

  6. It won't work. Not the 4 days here, 4 days there part anywhere. Police work is not your typical 40 hour a week job (nor is it your typical PT job, if thats what you're suggesting). Sure, you have schedules, but the end of your day can run ya 1 hour OT or 8 hours into OT. you can not just punch a clock and go home until everything you're working on is complete. say you're booking, you can't say "oh it's 9, my days done, here officer joe, you take over with this guy." lol, not that easy..

you could be an officer full time and just schedule hair here n there, but don't plan on having any exact set schedule, not the one you mentioned anyway.

good luck though, your goal orientated by the sounds of it, you'll figure it all out.

my personal opinion, be an officer, save the hair and nail stuff till you're a bit older, many officers retire (fairly) young, it'll be a nice change of pace for you in years to come.

  7. i think it is a good idea you will get to handcuff people with bad hairdo's
