Female police officers wearing leather gloves in the summer?

I work next to a police station, and there are alot of attractive female officers that I see every now and then. I am puzzled by the fact that many of them wear tight, short, unlined leather gloves as well as knee high leather boots. It's 90 degrees out, and I'm guessing they would be quite warm in this attire. Now that I think of it, I think it's more a fashion statement to show their toughness. What do you think? And if you're a police officer, can you shed some light on this?

I'm a female police officer.  I don't know about the knee high boots (i know that some motorcycle cops wear them and same with police on horse), but the gloves are usually for when I'm searching someone or car and such.  Mine aren't unlined though, I want all the protection I can get if I find into a needle or something. (Plus, some people and cars are just nasty).  Our uniforms are extremely hot in the summer. I can't imagine why they would wear something that would make them even hotter, especially if it's just a fashion statement.
