Hi,

I am seriously considering joining the British Army as a soldier (not enough qualifications for officer) & would very much appreciate any comments & advice from any other army females. Any information would be greatly received!

Better add that my first choice would be Military Police, 2nd choice Administrator.

Thank You!

  1. Are there not enough a**holes fighting for Queen, Country and the USA?

Get a real job. When your bits come home in a body bag I, for one, will not grieve!

  2. You need to go, in person, to a military  recruiting  centre, and ask those questions. The British Army has high standards of fitness, and in many cases that is the thing that many women have trouble with.

Many military occupations are   now highly technical in nature and require as much as three years for you  to become fully trained and qualified. Long gone are the days of the plodder who is barely able to read and write.

I was a Military Police investigator , for 30 years , in the Canadian Forces, retiring in 1996. I can say that the MP's are a very tough combination of smartness in personal appearance, and professional conduct. After all they  are the "model soldiers " that all others are judged against, both in and out of uniform.

Being  a part of the base Police service on a armed  forces base is like being a small town copper, with both military duties, like guarding important buildings , and the need to be a social worker, with family members who live on the base, who are called " dependants ". Teenagers, whose  parent is in the service, have to be  dealt with,,  as well as things like driving offences on base and such common things as thefts and domestic disputes.

As far as the admin role is concerned, many of those jobs are no longer being done by armed forces members. Why ? It is a waste of trained soldiers, to be using them as  office bunnies. Easier to hire a member of the public, at lower wages and less benefits.

Of course, bear in mind, that for every front line combat soldier, there are at least 9 others in the logistics trail, who support him/her , thru food, ammo, repairs to equipment, paymasters, medical, transport, planning, and so on.  Multiply that number by a 850 person infantry battalion  and how many supporting staff are there ? Now think that the British   army alone ( never mind the RAF or the RN ) has about 25 battlions of infantry, plus armoured units, artillery units , engineers, transport and helicopter  air support , so  yes it's a lot of people to feed and clothe and care for.

I hope that this has been helpfull to you. Go and see the recruiters, and ask lots  of questions.
