Question:

Feminists, are there any ways in which you do not advocate equal rights for men and women?

Gonz - I am all in favour of paternity leave. Only giving it to women sets in motion a pattern of women being the primary childcarers, that is almost impossible to break with later on. Parents should be given a parental leave allowance which they can use how they like :-)

  1. I think this begs the question that does equal rights mean exactly the same rights?

I personally think the difference is equal rights is the same rights in any APPLICABLE area that men and women should have the same rights. So VAWA although fairly in favour of women since they are weaker on average discriminates based on the circumstances of a gender which is clearly not equal since there are some very weak men physically and very strong women physically even if on average men are stronger.

So in terms of reproductive rights they cannot be the same because that's just absurd, men do not have uteruses so the rights are not applicable in the way they are to women. This does also raise the question of how much reproductive right should a woman even have but that's a different issue altogether

  2. Men and women should have equal rights in every area except for deciding on whether to terminate a pregnancy or not. I don't think anyone should be able to decide what someone else does or doesn't do with their own body.

  3. Only when it comes to pregnancy; until men can get pregnant, it'll be impossible to have completely equal rights.

  4. A possible military draft. Since I am not, with the current administration, patriotic, there is no freakin way I would fight for a country whose leader is not only weak but completely incompetent. I have other things to do besides kill innocent people.

  5. I don't think men should give birth if I can't write my name in the snow, If U catch my drift!

  6. I know this question was addressed to feminists, but:

Maternity leave of 52 weeks - no one has suggested that statutory paternity leave should be 52 weeks as well?

  7. well there are loads of examples....like equal pay at work...work oppotunities...how come thr r more men judges thn  women?....

  8. I'm a big feminist, as you know. I'm not in favour of men having abortion rights. He either has to pay for 18years or accept that his child is terminated depending.

  9. No.

  10. Men should not work in a lingerie shop

  11. Aside from basic human rights (Which even then are chiefly the products of a social policy and have to be enforced as such), all other gains are not so much 'rights' as decisions made according to what sort of civil society a nation would rather be. With the inevitable push and pull of opposing points of view.

'Rights', as I see it, is an overused word employed to try and convince people that fair treatment has some basis outside law, that it is a given.

Between the genders, equal treatment is obviously the basis of a fair civil society. It seems to me that interest groups make a mistake by trying to equate sensible social policy with 'rights'. The length of maternity leave is a decision made according to how it benefits individuals and society, not a right. The same goes for fair remuneration for work etc.

Evidently men and women, despite their common needs, also have different needs and peculiarities. Making social decisions based on these will always be a matter of considering circumstances.

  12. When women athletes can beat the men...only then should they be paid the same....The same is true for tennis players although inferior women players are paid the same as superior men players...how is that fair?

Anyone who disputes the fact should ask themselves...what chance would the Williams sisters have against Nadal and Federer....NONE!!..yet they are still paid the same...outrageous.

9 thumbs down....so I could expect to get the same pay as a premier footballer even if I'm not as good??
