Feminists!!! How do you reconcile your religious beliefs with feminist ideals?

This is something I struggle with. I believe in, support, and vote in favor of a woman's right to choose, but I also believe that life begins at conception and therefore abortion is killing an unborn person.

Seeing posters with a coat hanger and the words "NEVER AGAIN" evoke such emotion in me I cannot even describe it. But seeing the pictures the picketers hold up outside the Planned Parenthood I drive by on my way to work every day evoke strong emotions in me as well!

I am interested to know how other Christian feminists reconcile their spiritual beliefs with their feminist ideals, it is something I struggle back and forth with on almost a daily basis!

  1. i am an atheist-so i have no problems- i am all for women having an abortion than bringing a child into this world for whom they wont or cannot care for,  with the  fullest of  devotion,  for at least 20 years and usually for a lifetime

  2. As I see it. Abortion is not about feminism. In fact the first feminist where anti-abortionist. Read the history of feminism if you don't believe it.

Abortion is about the point of view that a fetus is human or not.

pro-choice believe that is not, thus is ok to kill it.

pro-life  believe that is human so is murder to kill it.

As you see this has nothing to do with feminism.

Instead, pro-choicer's have used the feminism movement as means of helping their cause. Some pro-choice are feminist, but not all feminist are pro-choice.

  3. Luckily, I don't have any religious beliefs at all, so I'm home free.

In your case, there are pro-life feminists out there. As long as you "turn the other cheek" to what other women want to do, I'd say you were doing OK.

  4. well on the abortion issue I like how Bryan puts it..." Pro Choice politically, Pro Life personally."

on the women should be subservient to men.

I wish to remind you that the religion and the politics of the church are different matters.

Take a look into the history of the Bible when...the books where written...when the bible was first put together and how many times it has been rewritten.  The bible was literally written by man after it the stories had been orally told for 200 years...last rewriting was with king James.

Is it possible that they might have twisted/ been a little Jaded to meet there own "ideals" some how?

  5. I'm agnostic and I don't believe abortion has anything to do with feminism-there are feminists who have all sorts of different beliefs about abortion-just like they do about many other issues facing society. As long as you and I don't expect the other to totally agree on every social issue-I'd say we can both be feminists and have different religious views as well.
