If so, what does the organization do to further the Feminist ideals?

How often do you meet, and what is accomplished at the meetings?

  1. oh my god

    do these things actually exist?

    how utterly grim.

  2. I don't belong to any organizations.  I just believe in equality between the sexes.  I have done free legal work for victims of domestic abuse, but that was more out of a sense of right and wrong.  Right now I am helping a man who raised his kids while their mother never paid child support.  She is now trying to get full custody and move the kids out of the state.  So, my actions are more egalitarian.

  3. no im not....i like men..

  4. no

  5. Yes, I do.

Some women in my sociology graduate program recently created a feminist organization. The organization is geared towards social activism on campus, in the community, and beyond. It also serves as a support group for our members, as it is a female-only group.

We typically meet once a week and discuss activism that we have engaged in throughout the week, share information about future opportunities for activism, and select a discussion topic.

Activism we've engaged in: working with the student health center to end sexist and heterosexist treatment, petitioning the university to prevent a local preacher from screaming sexist remarks ("w***e") at women walking through campus, sharing information regarding the toxicity of cosmetics, and sharing information regarding women's bodies (pregnancy, birth control options, the menstrual cycle). We've also attended other pro-woman activist events (like rallies to end violence against women), and are in the process of affiliating ourselves with a national feminist organization for sociologists.

Topics we've discussed: how to maintain respect in the classroom as a woman, body image, sexual harassment, media biases, departmental biases, how we came to identify as feminists, how to create equitable intimate relationships...

  6. Sort of but not really. I'm a board member for a women's centre that helps women leave abusive relationships. We meet once a month to go over the financial situation and overall direction of the centre. I also work with the fundraising committee and do a bit of communications work for them.

  7. I'm the co-president of my school's Feminist Club... It's a high school thing, and it was founded last year, so we haven't done a ton (but we're working on it!). We showed a movie to a bunch of classes about women's rights violations in Afghanistan and we are planning a self-defense class (directed mostly towards senior girls [because of college], but open to anyone who wants to learn it). One of our members also suggested that on equal pay day we have a bake sale and charge men 25 cents more. (I'm still mulling it over, and have to consider school policy, but it's an interesting and creative idea =])

We're working on a list of books to suggest to the English Department written by women, because our English classes read so few books by or about women.

During the school year we meet once a week and discuss different social issues as well as plan events.

  8. No.   There are a lot of things that I believe are good ideas that I just don't have the time and energy to support in an organized way.

  9. Yes I belong to two. One that meets approx monthly according to what is necessary for the campaigns. This is mainly for arranging protests, etc. This organisation aims to challenge the objectification/degradation of women.

The other is more open, for educating/discussion but its central theme is a yearly march. It meets monthly. Its ideals are against violence against women, and it is for really general feminism -pro equal pay etc. It works as an umbrella for a lot of other activism and is a chance to meet and join other campaigns.

  10. No. I attended one meeting of my university's "Womyn's Club," but as they told me, they're not feminists; they're "liberated" (as in, from all men). I'd start an equity feminist organization at my school if I had the time.

  11. feminists: what a joke! They bang on about equal rights which is fair enough I agree women should have the same opportunities as men however what annoys me is they seem to want it both ways.

I read something a few weeks ago about how women shouldn't be able to compete in boxing matching or mma fights because its to dangerous. I'm sorry but if men can do it surely women can ? or is this because your not as good as men. Basically I think what it comes down to is the fact women will moan at anything and everything. There not happy unless there moaning.

Men are the dominant species I'm not sexist this is just nature this is why men are built physically stronger an are less emotional women will break down and cry if they cant decide what colour knickers to wear. This is why a male (human, lion, etc) always be the protective dominant one this is how nature intended it to be. Please don't try and mess nature.

One more thing feminists always seem to be fat lesbians with short hair. Thank you for your time.
