Femke Heemskerk conquers Women’s 100m freestyle preliminary meet - 2011 FINA World Championships
Netherlands’ swimmer, Femke Heemskerk, conquered the Women’s 100m freestyle preliminary heat on day five of the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, on Wednesday, July 27.
The session of the meet conducted the Women’s 100m freestyle preliminary heat, where Heemskerk hit the wall in barely 53.75 seconds to notch the race in scintillating fashion. Earlier, Femke snagged the gold medal in the Women’s 4x100m freestyle final at
the current edition of the World Championships. Additionally, she secured the gold medal in the following meet at the 2009 edition of the championships, in Rome.
Meanwhile, Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark secured the second spot with a time of 53.88 seconds, while Femke Heemskerk’s team-mate, Ranomi Kromowid Jojo, earned third place honours with a time of 54.10 seconds. Dana Vollmer of United States captured the fourth
spot with a time of 54.24 seconds.
While speaking about her individual swim in the respective meet, Vollmer said, “A 100 is so much smoother, but sometimes a preliminary is hard, but as long as you are in the top 16, you are fine. I am trying not to look at who I am next to, and just focus
on my own race.”
Vollmer has already won the gold medal in the Women’s 100m butterfly at the current edition of the meet. Besides, she won three gold medals at the 2004 and 2007 editions of the World Championships, in Indianapolis and Melbourne, respectively.
Camille Muffat of France wound up fifth in a time of 54.35 seconds. Three swimmers settled in a tie for the sixth place, as Yolane Kukla, Alicia Coutts of Australia and Yi Tang of China completed their distance in a time of 54.37 seconds. After the heat,
Coutts said, “I wasn't feeling at my best this morning, but I will try my best in the semi-final. I am having a lot of fun, and am exciting to see what happens tonight.”
The ninth place went to Francesca Halsall of Great Britain with a time of 54.38 seconds, whereas, Aliaksandra Herasimenia finished tenth in 54.47 seconds.
