Femke Heemskerk grabs Women’s 200m freestyle gold – 2013 British International
Femke Heemskerk of the Netherlands grabbed the gold medal of the Women’s 200m freestyle on opening day of the 2013 British International in Leeds, UK on Friday, March 8.
Heemskerk faced tough competition from her following swimmer from the start but with her notable pace, she managed to secure the title. With her gruelling efforts, Heemskerk remained in a marginal lead over her supporters and occupied the gold medal.
She was only two arm-strokes ahead over her toughest challenger and tapped the wall for a gold medal with a time of 1 minute and 58.49 seconds for a gold medal.
The gold medallist was followed by Rebecca Turner of Co Sheffield with 0.23 seconds, who stepped on the finishing end for a silver medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 58.72 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Eleanor Faulkner of Co Sheffield, who was almost a full body length behind and secured the wall for third position by posting an effort of 1 minute and 59.42 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Siobhan-Marie O’Connor of Bath University, who stayed 0.61 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and posted an effort of 2 minutes and 00.03 seconds for fourth place.
Fifth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Sharon Van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands, who was 0.92 seconds apart and finished her race in a time of 2 minutes and 00.95 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Jemma Lowe of Swansea Uni, who was 0.84 seconds away from her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with the time of 2 minutes and 01.79 seconds.
Lowe was traced by Hannah Miley of Garioch, who stayed 0.23 seconds away from her former finisher and concluded her race in seventh place by producing an effort of 2 minutes and 02.02 seconds.
Last spot of the race was obtained by Sasha Matthews of Nova Cent’n, who failed to overpower her preceding swimmer and ended her race in eighth place by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 02.05 seconds.
Furthermore, the position holders received medals at the victory ceremony of the tournament after the session.
