Question:

Fence post depth in the foundation?

if local requirement is 4' deep hole 'cause of freezing line, how low should the post itselft go into the foundation?

I saw builder dig 4' holes but post only go 3' deep. Is that acceptable? Does it fall under this 4' rule? I can only presume that that foot at the bottom is filled with concrete mix as well.

  1. I prefer to make my fence post holes at at least twice the diameter of the post, and to set the post at at least 3/4 of the depth of the hole.  The post doesnt need to go all the way to the bottom of the hole.  This gives you some flexibility, if you run into obstructions, or need to level out the posts height.

If any less concrete were used (smaller hole diameter), or the post set at half way, or less... then  you could potentially see the post break out of the concrete during a high wind situation.

Putting the concrete to the 4 ft depth will keep the post stable during times of ground freeze/thaw.

When in doubt, go to the authority.... in this case, if you are wondering if the fence post, as installed, meets building codes, call the inspection office and ask.  Get it straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak, heheh.

  3. The builder dug 4' holes then most likely put posts in 2 foot of concrete. At least thats how we put our fence posts in. If thats the case you are fine.
