Hi,

I have some established vines crawling all over my old wooden fence. Since I am replacing the fence, what should I do with these vines? If I cut them way back will this kill them?

Thanks

  1. You can cut them back so they have only a few inches sticking out of the ground. The put some stump and vine killer on them.

If you don't want to use any chemicals, you will probably have to dig them completely out.

  2. I'm assuming you want to keep the vines.

Cutting them back to 8"to 10" in length won't kill them. Rather, it will make them grow even more vigorously and more thickly.

I have an orange trumpet vine that I cut back to that length on all its stems, and god, it's taken over the fence. It's more beautiful than it's ever been.

  3. I'm a little confused, are yo trying to save the vines or kill them? Several herbicides will kill it. If you are trying to save it get brutal and pull and prune as much as possible. After the new fence is up use a little twine to hold it until it climbs by itself.  RScott
