Fencing Grand Prix and World Cup held among World’s finest female fencers this weekend
Last weekend, two major fencing events concluded, including the Women's Epee Grand Prix (GP) and Women's Sabre Individual and Team World Cup that were held in Nanking, China and Ghent, Belgium, respectively.
Women's Epee took place on June 11 and 12 at the Arena of Nanjing Normal University Sports Centre in the Qixia district of Nanjing and 135 female fencers took part in it. These participants were divided in 17 pools, each comprising of seven fencers, whereas sixteen fencers got an automatic bye into the successive Top-64 Direct Elimination (DE) tableau.
The GP only comprised of Individual tournament among the senior fencers of various countries. Among all, the ones who took the top three podium seeds were Yana Shemyakina of Ukraine on top, who gave an easy defeat to the Russian, Anna Sivkova at 15-9. The third place was mutually shared between Bianca Del Carretto of Italy and the Hungarian Emese Szasz.
On the other hand, the Women's Sabre World event took place from June 10-12 at the Sports Hall Bourgoyen in Ghent with more than 165 female fencers that took part in the individual event. These participants were divided in 22 pools. First 19 pools comprised of seven fencers each, whereas last three pools had six fencers each. Moreover, 16 fencers had an automatic-bye to the top-64 DE tableau.
This is the 6th edition of the Individual Women's Sabre World Cup is also named as Challenge Yves Brasseur. The Individuals were held on the first two days, whereas the Team World Cup conducted on the last day of the event.
In the Individual World Cup the top podium place was secured by Italy’s Irene Vecchi who had a close fight against the American Dagmara Wozniak and defeating her by 15-12. The bronze medal was jointly awarded to Olena Khomrova of Ukraine and USA’s Daria Schneider.
On the other hand, in the Senior Women's Sabre Team World Cup, the Russians took the top spot after defeating the Ukrainian team by 45-40.
For the third place, a play-off took place between France and Italy in which the Italian team gave a single-handed defeat to the French fencers at 45-26.
Overall, the women fencers from Ukraine, Italy and America stood-out at both the international events, awarding them with valuable world ranking points for the 2012 London Olympics ahead.
