Fencing Results: Cadet and Grand Prix World Cup
The Grand Prix World Cup event took place on 29 and 30 January, 2011 in Paris, France. The event saw the US fencing team do well and improve on previous performances. The top spots in most events were secured by traditionally strong fencing squads from
Europe and Asia.
At the conclusion of the event Japan came out on top on several occasions. They placed first in the Men’s Team Foil followed by Russia, Italy and China as second. The 12th spot was secured by the US team. The US had come into the event ranked
seventh but later got defeated with a 45-25 score by the very fine team from Great Britain. The US team was only able to beat the Israeli team with a 45-30. They lost bouts against Austria with 45-38 and Poland on a head-to-head 45-44.
In the individual Foil Rommel, Erwan Le Pechoux of France, topped the chart with the silver being secured by Giorgio Avola of Italy. The third spot was taken by Benjamin Kleibrink of Germany and fourth place by Victor Sintes of France. In the same event,
the USA’s Alexander Massialas managed to defeat Japanese fencer, Suguru Awaji, by 15-11. Later, the 16-year-old was trounced out of the competition by Japanese fencer Yuki Ota in a 15-10 bout. The California native ended up in 25th place out of 182 competitors.
The Cadet fencers of the US battled in London, England at the European Cadet Circuit event held on 29 and 30 January, 2011. In Men’s Saber, Italy’s Luca Curatoli and Alessandro Riccardi were stand-outs, securing the first two positions of the event. The
US managed to secure four top-eight positions at the European Cadet Circuit event. Geoffery Loss of California and Peter Pak of New York took the fifth and sixth position in the U17 Men’s Saber event. Moreover, Sage Palmedo and Alexa Antipas had placed fifth
and seventh in the Women’s Saber event. This was a very successful event for the US team, who was able to secure twelve positions out of the total 88 competitors. Three of these positions were in the top-ten.
With the 2012 Olympics with just around the corner, the US Fencing Association was quite happy with the performances by the fencers in the two events. Coaches were able to gauge the competitiveness of the team and plan future training regiments accordingly.
The US team was also able to pinpoint the strongest contenders for the Olympics.
