Fencing to make a big impact at the 2011 European Maccabi Games
Fencing is all set to make a big impression and steal the show at the upcoming 2011 European Maccabi Games to be held in Vienna, Austria on 5 July, 2011. Fencing is one of the most elegant and popular events that is played at the tournament. Many fencing
fans from all parts of the world will converge on the games to watch their favourite individuals and teams battle it out for the top honours. Fencing is making its mark as a truly international sport with the goal of making a lasting impression at this year’s
games.
The Maccabi Games is an international event held every year for the Jewish athletic community, with the basic aim of promoting unity and cooperation amongst the various teams from different parts of the world. More than 2000 athletes from 40 different countries
will participate in 19 sports including fencing, soccer, tennis, volleyball, badminton, beach volleyball, bridge, basketball, field hockey, chess, golf, judo, futsal, karate, TP bowling, swimming, squash, target shooting and table tennis. All the International
Jewish teams will represent themselves in Junior, Open and Master categories for each sport.
Many athletes approach the tournament as the perfect prelude to the upcoming 2012 Olympics. Some athletes that have yet to be selected for their respective Olympic teams realise the importance of performing at their optimum level to get noticed by the selectors
for possible inclusion into their national team.
Fencing will be played in both the male and female divisions of the Junior, Open and Master categories. The Foil, Sabre and Epee competitions will be held in both individual and team events. These competitions will be conducted according to the rules and
regulation of the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime. The Fencing Committee of the 13th European Maccabi Games will issue a participant card to the eligible athletes allowing them to take part in the competition. Only six fencers in individual
competitions and one team may participate per country. These limitations allow for an extremely balanced competitive environment, as only the best athletes are chosen to represent their respective country.
The top ranked fencing countries of France, Italy, United States and Brazil will take part in the exciting competition. All the fencing teams have a tremendous amount of experience and competitive spirit. Understanding the responsibility resting on their
shoulders, a sense of national pride motivates the fencers to create a highly charged atmosphere. The United States fencers are the team to watch out for this year, as they have risen in the ranks to become aggressive and fiercely competitive. They are sure
to give the other teams a tough time during the tournament. It is hard to predict which team will take the top honours, as most of the fencers are equally matched in skill and experience.
The venue for the fencing events is Sporthalle Brigittenau gymnasium, with a capacity to seat more than 1000 people. The hall will be packed to the rafters during the individual and team fencing events at this year’s tournament. The sheer simplicity and
pace of fencing will provide the fans with some very entertaining and highly competitive matches. It will be interesting to see how many people are pulled to fencing from the other sporting events during the tournament.
The honour and prestige of winning at the games is what drives each fencer to take his or her performance to the next level. It is this competitive spirit that puts fencing in the spotlight and will make the 13th European Maccabi Games more exciting
and successful.
