  1. The fender jaguar is an excellent guitar.  I swear by mine, and I just bought another one the other day.  The top switch switches between the lead and rhtyhm circuits, one of which is bassier, the other is treblier.  The bottom ones only work on the lead circuit, and they turn the pickups on or off, as well as activate a mid boost circuit.  I've played my humbucking jaguar for years for everythign from jazz to metal to punk to pop.  I just got an original jaguar that sounds amazing as well, especially for surf and jazz.

  2. it is a good guitar, although i would pick a tele over it. its probably not good if youre just starting. the black switches are for the pickups. In general, most jaguar models have tremelo bridges, so you can use a whammy bar (the HH model doesn't though). Strats usually also have tremelo bridges, and teles usually don't. the jag usually has humbucking pups, while strats have single coils. teles are about 50-50 between humbuckers and single coils. jaguars also have 22 frets, strats have 21, and most teles have 22.
