Fenerbahce Universal ISTANBUL earns a ticket into final of 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League
A semi-final match of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Women took place on March 24 in the Azerbaijan city of Baku.
The two teams that were competing each other for a spot in the finals were the Turkish team of Fenerbahce Universal ISTANBUL as well as the Russian squad of Dinamo KAZAN. The venue of the competition was the “Heydar Aliyev” Sports and Concert Complex.
The match between the two sides went on for four long and thrilling sets at the end of which the Turkish were able to earn a ticket into the final of the tournament at the following final set scores: 17-25, 25-23, 25-17 and 25-18.
The coach of the winning team, Ze Roberto, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match reached its close, “The final match with RC CANNES will be a great fight. They have a couple of outstanding middle
blockers, Rasic and Ravva, while Centoni is also in a great shape. Their libero, Paola Cardullo, is like a cat, she is reaching every ball and so we will need to deliver a great performance to take the trophy.”
The first set of the match saw the Turkish take the lead at the coming of the first technical time out at 8-6.
However, the Russians were able to close in the gap and take the lead for themselves at 16-12 and stretched the advantage to 18-12. It was only a matter of time after that point that the Russians were able to secure the opening set of the game at 25-17.
The Turkish team stepped up their performance in the second set of the frame and provided a significant challenge to their Russian counterparts. The score remained close in the entire set with no one sure where the tables would turn until the end when the
Turkish were able to win the frame at 25-23.
After winning the second frame, the Turkish team went on to grab the third as well as the fourth sets of the match by a comfortable margin at 25-17 and 25-18 respectively.
