Fenerbahce Universal ISTANBUL sweeps RC CANNES in final of the CEV Volleyball Champions League
The final match of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Women’s took place on March 25.
The city of Baku in Azerbaijan played host to the title match of the competition. The two teams that competed for the gold medal against each other were RC CANNES of France as well as Fenerbahce Universal ISTANBUL of Turkey. The venue of the final match
of the championship was the “Heydar Aliyev” Sports and Concert Complex.
The final did not take too long to reach its close as the Turkish were able to make a clean sweep over RC CANNES and get hold of the top slot. The scoreboard showed the following final set scores at the end of the game: 25-14, 25-22, and 25-20.
The first set of the match saw the French take the lead at 9-7 but the Turkish were able to take control by securing the lead for themselves at 14-11.
By the time that the second technical time out came, the Turkish still had the lead at 16-12. When the two teams came back onto the courts, the Turkish picked up pace and sped on to secure the opening frame of the game at 25-14.
The start of the second set saw the Turkish take the lead at 3-1 which was extended to 10-9 and later on till 13-10. However, the French were able to make the set reach a tie at 17-17. Despite the effort of the French, the Turkish grabbed hold of the second
set too at 25-22.
The third set of the game followed much the same pattern as the previous set with the Turkish bagging a win at 25-20.
The title of the best scorer of the match went to Kim Yeon-Koung of Fenerbahce Universal ISTANBUL. This was not the only title that Yeon-Koung received in the final match as she was also awarded the honour of being the Most Valuable Player because of her
outstanding performance.
With the RC CANNES securing the silver medal in the competition, the Russian squad of Dinamo KAZAN was able to get their hands on the bronze medal of the championship.
On the other hand, the Italian team of MC-Carnaghi VILLA CORTESE took the fourth position.
