Feng Tianwei hopes to clinch a medal at the World Championship: Table Tennis News
Feng Tianwei is hoping to clinch more titles this year as she is eyeing for a medal in the up-coming GAC World Championship. Feng has slipped down to sixth spot of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) ranking from the third position.
Feng Tianwei said, "As for the target of an individual medal, I have confidence to go out there and fight for it."
Feng Tianwei made her first public appearance after returning from a long training camp in Taiwan. Feng is the first Singaporean to win the season-ending 2010 ITTF Pro Tour Grand Final. She has featured in five ITTF Pro Tours including Slovenia, England,
Qatar, UAE and Germany in this year, but failed to win any major title.
Last Friday, Feng paid a visit to Bright Hill Evergreen Home, an old house in Singapore. Feng, during her visit, said, "I was very sad after seeing all these old people here and my heart ached for them. I also thought of my grandma so I was a little overwhelmed."
Feng is fully prepared for the up-coming World Championship. The training, which she has been receiving in Taiwan, has helped her in recovering the psychological tranquillity after the defeats she faced earlier this year.
There would be 11 players in the Singaporean squad who will compete in the individual events of the World Championship. They will fight in all five competitions of the event including the Men's and Women's singles, Men's and Women's doubles, and Mixed doubles.
The World Championship is held once a year and has two championships in its format, individual and team championships. The Singaporean table tennis team marked history in 2010, when the Feng Tianwei-led-team defeated the mighty Chinese women’s team in the
finals of the World Championship.
Feng has to unleash the best of her abilities if she has to make it to the finals. There are seven Chinese women players in the single’s draw and five of them are placed at the top-seeded platform of the championship and the world ranking.
Her performance in the recent ITTF Pro Tours suggests that she really needs to show an up-hill fight in order to compete the Chinese players. The assistant coach of the Singaporean women's team, Jing Junhong, thinks that there is no sign of alarm in her
playing style. Feng has spent a considerable amount of time in learning variant styles in her service.
For Feng Tianwei the long-term goal is the 2012 Olympics. Jing Junhong, who thinks highly of Feng, said, “I hope she will gain confidence at the world championships. We will work on the tweaks long-term, but, of course, if she makes a breakthrough in Rotterdam,
it will not be a surprise. If not, it will be okay."
The Singaporean team will be leaving for Netherlands today. All the training of the Feng and her hard-work will be rewarded if she makes it to the finals.
