Hello, I am a nursing student working on a case study.

I am wondering what would be a reason to choose Fentanyl over Morphine as a postoperative analgesic.

Thank you

  1. Personal preference. Histamine release associated with morphine.  Duration of action (MS > fent).

I think patients tolerate fentanyl a little better, especially if they're prone to post-operative nausea and vomiting.

I'm actually a fan of hydromorphone.  Nice, long-acting analgesic.

  2. Fentanyl causes respiratory depression n people have died from it.  It is a very strong medication n preferred for people that r dyin of cancer.  U wouldn't give it to a kid for a tonsilectomy.

Morphine is not without its hazards n is usu titrated for pain. It will stop ur heart when given in large doses, anything above 4mg.

  3. It's much shorter acting and has less related histamine release, for a couple I can think of off the top of my head.  Those aren't general reasons but in selected cases will be desired.

  4. From experience Fentanyl does not make you as drowsy after a procedure. When I think of morhine, I think of inpatient, Fentanyl is tolerable enough to have after surgery and be coherent.
