My Father found a feral kitten in my backyard earlier this evening. He managed get it in a container for animals. It has not moved since it got in there and was moved inside the house, and every time we walk nearby the container, it hisses and spits at us. Is this normal behavior? And if it is, how long will it continue to hiss and spit?

  1. I have worked in several animal shelters and that is definately normal behaviour for a frightened cat in new surroundings.

How long it takes to tame will depend on the kitten, how old it is, etc.

If you put the container in a quiet room, cover it over so he is not overwhelmed, provide him with food and water, and talk to him softly, he should come around within a few days.

Its pretty impressive that your dad managed to catch it- if he didn't use a trap he did really well!

  2. my brother found a stray cat that was pregnant.

we kept her and she had 3 kittens

we kept 2 and all they did when they were lil was hiss and spit

we were so confused because we had already had 3 cats and they never did this as kittens.

but they soon got over it.

  3. He needs to feel identified with the surrounding, it will take time, i would advice you better to take him to a home, where he/she can be taken care of. since feral kittens take from 3 weeks to 2 months to get controlled i got one, by a neighbor, and he lasted 3 weeks since he couldn't adapt to a house, nor to my other cats.
