Question:

Feral and Stray Cats?

I live out in the country close to wichita, ks, and my home has become a dumping ground for stray cats and kittens. I don't have alot of money, but I would love to at the very least get all of these cats spayed and neutered. I was wondering if there are any charities or organizations that could help me out. Or if there is a way I can set up my own charity to help my growing herd of unwanted cats. Most of them are pretty friendly and would make great pets...but unfortunatly it is quite hard to find homes for them. Any advise would be greatly appriciated, Thanks!

  1. you can try and find homes for them on craigslist.com

also i live in texas and there are a lot of orginaztions that have very cheap spay and neuter.

i think you are a very good person to want to get them spayed and neutered. there are too many unwanted cats.

  2. Research in your area for local catch, neuter, and release programs. They can help you find affordable clinics to do the surgeries. Hopefully the friendly ones can be adopted out.

  3. you have to look around. search the internet. call vets. there are a lot around.

i would try to work with an existing feral cat rescue shelter, rather then competing with them by starting a new one.

you will need to ask other shelters and a lawyer about starting your own, have no idea if you need a license.

  4. Many shelters have low or no cost spay and neuter programs for strays and ferals.  Start by calling around to see if there is something like that in your area.  What you are seeking to do is called trap-neuter-return.  There is a national organization called Alley Cat Allies that specializes in that very thing.  I don't have their web site address here at work with me, but if you do a search you will find them.  There is a lot of good information on their web site that you will find very helpful!

  5. You've had some good answers already.  There sure are certain vets and/or shelters that will do this free or at low cost.  The rescue I adopted two of my cats from also does trap-neuter-release... if you can find local rescues that do this, they could probably tell you which vets in your area participate.  The SPCA or local shelters, or even calling up some vets, is a good way to start.
