I agree with William Manchester in his novel, A World Lit Only by Fire. What are some or your opinions to this claim? And if you agree, why? How would you defend this statement?

  1. No - - - Magellan may have been an o-k sailor, he was not a well rounded sort - - - the term Renaissance Man is most often used to describe a man of many talents and as far as history records Magellen did not sculpt or paint or write - - - but Magellen's worst trait was an utter inability to get along with his fellow crew members or just about anyone else which was why he lost his life in the Phillipnes due his arrogance & stupidity.

A good book to explore is--------

Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe (P.S.) (Paperback)

    by Laurence Bergreen (Author)

A good contrast is Sir Francis Drake who survived his voyage around the Globe and did dabble in poetry and other arts.  Oh and a fascinating bit of history the first person to actually circle the globe was most likely a Filipino - - - one of Magellen's servants/slaves spoke the Native Language and had been recorded as having been captured by Arab traders in the true Indies........
