The veteran Scot claimed that criticism surrounding the Sunderland manager was not justified and that there was no doubting his talents.
Martin O’Neill has been subjected to intense criticism this season following his side’s struggle to achieve a decent run of form.
The Black Cats finished in a decent position last season and it was expected that the former Aston Villa boss will be able to turn their sagging fortunes around with a complete campaign under his belt.
However, that has not been the case and currently the club are languishing at the bottom of the table, with the relegation battle proving to be a real threat to their Premier League status.
A man credited with bringing UEFA Cup football to Villa Park undoubtedly has quality and as the recent 3-0 win over Reading proves, the future for Sunderland is not all that bleak.
O’Neill’s friend and rival Sir http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 Ferguson has quickly jumped to defend the tactician and claimed that he had proven his worth over the years and the criticism being directed at him right now was all nonsense.
Speaking to reporters, the long-serving United manager claimed that his pal won silverware while in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749, thus it was foolish to doubt his credentials at this stage.
"Martin O'Neill has won three titles with Celtic and taken them to the Uefa Cup final. He's been at Aston Villa, he's been at Leicester City. He was asked a question last week which was absolutely ridiculous, about whether he still had self-belief,” said
Ferguson.
Continuing, he added that there should not be any doubting O’Neill’s ability to secure Sunderland’s top flight status but also reiterated that the side’s fans did not do themselves justice after gloating United at the Stadium of Light last May.
"It was a silly question, an absolute insult because he is an outstanding manager. The Sunderland fans’ reaction was disappointing given the number of players we have given them down the years, but there was no malice in it and there is no element of revenge,”
Ferguson was quoted as saying while speaking to the media before the game.
