Although the English midfielder has put in some good displays, United have conceded three times in the last two games and clearly need a natural defender, if they are to come away with three points at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Evans has been out with an injury since the end of the last campaign and up until now hasn’t shown any signs of recovering. But with summer break and pre-season training to dwell on, he has gained some fitness and is likely to start in the next fixture.
Fergie is clearly thrilled with having his defence back to normal and reiterated that the centre-back was the best option under the current circumstances.
“On the centre back front, which is really my main concern at the moment, Jonny Evans played Wednesday in the reserves and came through fine. He is certainly the strongest option we’ve got. It’s an improvement from what it’s been like the last two games."
The veteran tactician also spoke about Wayne Rooney’s horrific injury against Fulham, claiming that the striker would be out for almost a month.
“And, of course, Wayne, I think will be four weeks. It’s a bad gash but he was treated really quickly and we don’t expect any complications from it. I think four weeks he should be back. The fact it’s a gash, not a ligament or muscle injury, means he can
do a lot of work in the gymnasium. We’re not too bad with that.”
United next take on the Saints away from home but considering that their defence has been shored up, the Reds are likely to come out with a win.
