Manchester United manager Sir http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 Ferguson claimed that his side deserved to leave Ewood Park with three points yesterday, although they could have scored more goals.
The Red Devils travelled to Lancashire last night aiming for an away victory, which would see them cement their place on top of the League with a five point gap over arch-rivals Manchester City.
Ferguson’s men struggled to breakdown a resilient Rover’s side for the majority of the 90 minutes and even had some close calls of their own.
Had it not been for the heroics of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-de-Gea-c10463, who made a number of saves to keep the hosts at bay.
United then finally struck first blood on the 80th minute, when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-c29347 Robinson’s net, leaving the English shot-stopper with no chance whatsoever.
Ashley Young, who came off the bench in the latter stages, then added the icing on the cake with brilliantly taken strike on 85 minutes.
Although it was far from a vintage Manchester United performance, it was enough to secure three points, which is definitely more important in the season run-in.
Speaking to reporters, after the match, Sir Alex Ferguson hailed his side’s perseverance and ability to dig deep and grind out results when it mattered the most.
“It was a long night wasn’t it? We just had to persevere and we got our rewards for it. We have scored more goals now and I think that’s a big step forward for us, from a deficit of about 18 and it’s now only one. It could come to goal difference, who knows?
Now we have scored more goals than City."
He also urged his players to keep their focus and warned them about complacency, despite their healthy lead at the top.
“We have still got seven games left and my experience of these situations is that it doesn’t matter what the points total is at the moment, what is really important is to try and win Sunday’s game against Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314,” the gaffer said.
United next play QPR at Old Trafford on Sunday.
