Fernandez wins fourth stage as Rodriguez retains overall lead in Vuelta A Burgos 2011

Katusha team’s Daniel Moreno Fernandez showed a tremendous effort and won the fourth stage of Vuelta A Burgos 2011 on Saturday, August 6. Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver maintained his overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The race started in Roa de Duero and ended in Ciudad Romana de Clunia. The 29-year-old Spanish road racing cyclists took the total of 3 hours, 44 minutes and 28 seconds to cover the distance of 168 kilometres.
In the final kilometres of the stage, Rodriguez showed his powerful strength but his effort was neutralised. However, his team-mate Daniel Moreno launched an attack to take a lead ahead of Sanchez.
"I have to thank Joaquím for the big help he gave me in the crucial part of the stage," said Moreno "Without his help, I probably couldn't have won today. Tomorrow all of us will try to help our leader in order to defend his overall lead. If we manage to,
this Vuelta a Burgos will be incredible for Katusha."
The four cyclists made their first breakaway lead Antonio Cabello (Andalucia Caja Granada), Rony Martias (Saur-Sojasun), Pascual Orengo (Burgos 2016-Castilla y León) and Mikel Bizkarra (Orbea Continental). Mikel Bizkarra launched an attack but were unable
to maintain his pace and Rony Martias took the first three sprints.
All of them were caught by the peloton in the final 30 kilometres. Katusha team showed good effort and with help of his team Dainel Moreno crossed the finish line without any difficulty.
Samuel Sanchez Gonzalez of Euskaltel-Euskadi was runner-up with 1 second behind the Spaniard. Pablo Lastras Garcia of Movistar finished third with the same timing of Samuel.
Previously, Daniel took second place in Japan Cup and overall fifth place in Vuelta a Chichuahua. He also took second place in Giro del Piemonte in 2009.
Rodriguez Oliver took the overall standing with the timing of 11 hours, 12 minutes and 2 seconds. David Lopez Garcia was runner-up with 7 seconds and Pablo Lastras Garcia finished third with 8 seconds behind the Spanish.
The next stage will start in Areniscas de los Pinares and all the cyclists will cover the distance of 155 kilometres.
