Fernando Alonso: Enough of Red Bull, its Ferrari’s time to shine in Spain – Formula 1 news
Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso insists that Red Bull’s rampage in the opening four races of the 2011 season will soon come to a halt when Ferrari steps in the Spanish Grand Prix.
The Spaniard stated that some upgrades are planned for the Spanish GP which will go down well.
Alonso recently extended his contract with the Ferrari team and seemed confident in the scarlet car because for the first time in the 2011 season, he actually thinks that Ferrari can do some damage to Red Bull’s glory.
Alonso said, “We are optimistic and confident and we intend to be fighting with them (Red Bull) soon. Red Bull has been very dominant in the first part of the Championship. But we want to change this, starting here in Barcelona.”
The Spaniard further notified that Red Bull have been way ahead in the races and qualifiers in terms of speed but Ferrari’s upgrades will hopefully change something.
In 2010, the story was almost the same when Ferrari started the season like a snail but soon became the team to watch out for. In the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi, Alonso was only inches away from grabbing the championship.
Still, Alonso believes that Ferrari can close down the gap to the Red Bull team. He said, “It's true the gap was one second last year - and this year it was even more than that at some tracks. But we are working hard and think the gap will close. I would
be disappointed if it is a second again this weekend.”
The Spaniard’s performance graph has improved in the last couple of races, especially in the Turkish Grand Prix where he finished third.
Alonso will be driving in front of his home crowd when Formula 1 returns to Spain for the fifth Grand Prix of the 2011 season on May 22.
