Fernando Alonso: Ferrari not in a position to fight for title – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that they are not in a position to fight for the championship title in 2012 Formula 1 season at this point in time after struggling in Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday.
Alonso showed an impressive performance at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia and won the rain hit race.
Moreover, he secured an amazing fifth place finish in the first race at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia after staring from the 12th position in the grid.
However, the Spaniard could only secure ninth place finish in the third race held at Shanghai International Circuit in China after qualifying for the same grid position.
Nevertheless, he said that they are eying at some major advancements ahead of the European season while he said that they are currently in no position to fight for the title.
“We are hoping for a good step forward for the start of the European season because, at the moment, we are too far behind and not in a position to fight for the championship,” said Alonso.
Furthermore, he said that the mid-season test which is going to be held at Mugello has a great significance for the Scarlet team as it will help them in the evaluation of the enhancements in F2012.
“We hope the change comes soon: Mugello will be an important test and then Barcelona is traditionally a race where all the teams bring improvements, so we will have to make a bigger step than the others and recover some of the gap,” added Alonso.
In addition, he said that he expects two teams to be in the front in the upcoming races while he said that he needs to perform well in order to stay close to the front.
On the other hand, the technical director of Ferrari, Pat Fry said that they need to make the substantial preparations and the necessary developments in their car so as to enhance its pace in the races ahead.
Meanwhile, the team principal, Stefano Domenicali said that they have to strive at their best to enhance their performance in the approaching races.
