Fernando Alonso: Fight for pole position at Australian Grand Prix wide open – Formula 1 news
The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has said that the fight for the pole position during the qualifying session is now “wide open” after McLaren’s performance during the second free practice session this Friday in Australia.
“These two free practice sessions have not actually revealed the real relative strengths of the teams: this morning Red Bull went well and in the afternoon it was McLaren's turn, with us and Mercedes always in the mix, while Williams and Renault also seem
competitive,” he said.
Red Bull Racing Team, McLaren and Ferrari are the fastest teams up until now according to the Friday test sessions results.
However, Fernando added that he is not ruling out Mercedes GP, Williams or Lotus Renault GP either as they have the ability to surprise the rest of the teams on the grid.
“There are so many teams who could be in with a chance of going for the win and therefore it's obvious that it will be necessary to have a good Saturday, without any mistakes if you want to start from the front row,” said Fernando.
Fernando Alonso scored the third fastest time of the day behind the two McLarens but Ferrari are not as far as it seems since the Spaniard’s time was almost 2 tenths slower than the fastest time scorer Jenson Button.
He added that Ferrari wanted to test the behaviour of the new Pirelli tyres mainly during the two practice sessions but stated that it was still too early to predict anything about the new tyres.
Nevertheless, the two-time world champion is happy with his team’s performance and is waiting to hit the tracks once again on 26 March, 2011 for the qualifying session of the Australian Grand Prix which is going to be the real test for all the teams.
