Fernando Alonso: Four to five teams in contention of winning in 2011 Formula 1 season
The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso has recently stated that at least four to five teams are going to run for wins in the 2011 Formula 1 season alongside his team Ferrari.
Ferrari scored some pretty good results at the pre-season test sessions this year and it seems that they have a pretty good car in terms of pace and reliability. However, Alonso was unable to run for a lot of laps during a rainy final day of the final pre-season
test session as he was able score just 5 laps throughout the day.
In dry conditions on the other hand, Alonso scored the second fastest time of the week that was beaten by Mercedes GP’s Michael Schumacher only on the 4th day of the session.
The Spaniard stated that Schumacher is going to be a serious rival for him throughout the 2011 Formula 1 season and since he has a pretty good car, he is going to perform at his best once again this season.
“I think Mercedes has shown it has made a good step forward compared to the start of the tests and can be one of the favourites for Melbourne. It's normal that, with a quick car, Michael should immediately be competitive,” said Fernando.
He added that besides McLaren, Red Bull Racing Team and Mercedes, Lotus Renault GP are looking pretty good as well this year along with Team Williams.
However, it would be easier to give a verdict about each team’s respective car after the first race of the 2011 season as each team would show its ‘true potential’ then.
“Then, we will have a more realistic picture of the situation and a smaller group of teams who will fight it out for the championship and we hope to be part of it,” said the Spaniard.
He stated that Red Bull are probably the favourite team but it will not make much difference to Ferrari if they are ahead or even behind the 2010 champions. Alonso finished in 2nd place in the 2010 Formula 1 season just 4 points behind the 2010
champion Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ standings.
Nevertheless, Alonso is aiming for nothing less than the title this year and since he claims that Ferrari have a very good car ahead of the season opener that is expected to take place in Australia on March 27, 2011, the season is going to be very promising
for him and his team.
