Fernando Alonso: I am proud of the team and happy we went for the victory – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso said that he still feels proud of his team and pleased with the efforts they made to win the 2012 Canadian Grand Prix held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10.
Alonso took the lead from Lewis Hamilton of McLaren when the Briton went for his second pit stop during 50th lap. However, he struggled with the issue of tyre degradation and failed to maintain his lead towards the end of the race.
Although, he could only secure 5th place finish in Montreal, nevertheless, he said that he is not feeling disappointed with his team’s strategy.
“I'm proud of the team and happy we went for the victory,” Alonso said. “We tossed coin in air and we waited to see result and it didn't work. At-least we tried and we were not happy with second. In the end it was too many laps and we ran out of tyres suddenly
and it was too late to pit.”
He added, “Lewis was quicker than us all the way through pitting at the same time of Lewis we would have come second, which now seems like much better result than fifth, but after race that's easy to say.”
The Spaniard is currently at second place in the drivers’ championship with 86 points. Moreover, he is 2 points behind Hamilton and just 1 point ahead of the defending champion, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing.
Meanwhile, the Scarlet team is presently at fourth place in the constructors’ championship with 97 points. In addition, they are 28 points ahead of Mercedes and 11 points behind Lotus.
It will be important to mention that the team principal of Ferrari, Stefano Domenicali said that Alonso is just 2 points behind the leading driver, Hamilton, in drivers’ rankings and they are feeling confident that he will come up strong in the season ahead.
Over and above, he said that they are trying their best to make the necessary preparations and the essential developments so as to improve the pace of their car for the forthcoming races in order to fight for the championship title this year.
