Fernando Alonso: Red Bull Racing Team still the best in terms of qualifying pace – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that even though he was the fastest driver of the second free practice session of the 2011 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing team is still the favourite for qualifying which will take place on Saturday,
June 11, 2011.
Sebastian Vettel was unable to score a desired amount of laps in the first free practice session as he crashed in to the “Wall of Champions.” However, since his team had a lot of time to repair his car before the second free practice session, the reigning
world champion took part in the second session and was just 3 tenths off of Fernando Alonso’s fastest time.
As a result, Alonso believes that Red Bull Racing team is going to improve until Saturday and probably score much better results.
“We did not concentrate on the times or anything. So it is always positive to see yourself in the first four or five positions, but today is not really important. We also topped the practice in Monaco and then in qualifying Vettel was one second quicker
than us - we know tomorrow is the day to put everything into it and we know Red Bull will be very strong and probably the favourite,” he said.
Nevertheless, he warned that since rain is expected to hit the track for the rest of the weekend, the data acquired in these Friday practice sessions might prove to be useless for the rest of the sessions and the upcoming race.
“The rain is forecast, tomorrow it is supposed to rain and especially Sunday so all the job we did today is maybe just for practice because everything can change for tomorrow. We will stay focused and get ready for a change,” he added.
However, the upcoming race is going to be quite competitive for McLaren, Red Bull Racing team and Ferrari and it is going to be interesting to see how they perform during the qualifying session on Saturday as it would affect the race drastically.
